As we all know gym memberships double in January and most people have also succumbed to the #DryJanuary school of thought. Here are some of our tips that can help to get you started.
As seems to be the way, that as soon as you stop you get sick. So after this New Year I have decided to look at my lifestyle in the whole, as opposed to quick fixes set with the best of intentions. Personally, I am looking into the benefits of going Tee-total for a few months, as opposed to weeks and making small changes to my lifestyle, so that I can fit in exercise and eat healthily.
Whether you are of this mindset or not, there is something in a moderate way of living. Particularly after the month of indulgence that was inevitable throughout the party season.
Making these changes in bitesize chunks makes it less of a daunting task! Instead of saying that I have given up drinking, gone on a diet and joined a gym. I have chosen to see how long I can abstain from alcohol, make a food diary and see in black and white what I already know, that I eat way too much sugar and carbohydrates.
I plan to change my meals so that they are predominantly fruit or vegetables, will walk most lunchtimes and am currently looking into a challenge that I can do with some friends that will encourage me to get fitter throughout the year.
Getting Fit For Free
Look at your local gym and see if there are offering any free trials, some gyms offer free passes for up to a week! and get yourself booked into some classes, try out the pool or the sauna for some extra relaxation.
YouTube is a great place to find some free workouts that you can do in the comfort of your home alone without judgement or download a free workout app, most have some freebie vids to entice you.
Walking and Running
It is probably the last thing you want to do on a winter evening but you can take off the edge by starting slowly and going for a brisk walk either before or after work. Believe it or not it is the great way to start work without stress and with a fresh mind.
Facebook Fitness Groups
Check your local Facebook group and see if there are any walking, cycling or dancing groups looking for more members or better yet start your own. I guarantee you are not the only one out there in your area looking for a group of likeminded people to start something different in the new year
Local Community Centres
Check your local community or leisure centre for existing groups, Zumba, Martial Arts, Jogging. Someone is bound to have a similar interest to you.
One of a great motivators for getting fit is a cause that you are passionate about. Perhaps you want to raise money for a local charity or a charity that is close to your heart.
During RedJanuary there are lots of events in aid of mind charity that are on throughout the month to build awareness for mental health.
